Screeching Noise
Hello, my problem is that there is some kind of screeching noise coming from somewhere in the case. At first i thought it may be one of the fans hitting against one of the casings or heatsinks. The noise goes away sometimes, i shall try to determine what triggers the noise but for now i would like some suggestions as to what is causing it. I would rule out the motherboard since i have had two and the noise has been noticable in both occasions. Thanks in advance.

Re: Screeching Noise
Hi,
There are very few moving parts in a PC and 80% of those are fans. My money is on a fan this time. Let us know once you have identified the location of the noise.

Hopefully it's a fan...and not a harddrive bearing.No performance issues ?
If it is the CPU fan-- or the Video card cooling fan-- you'll need to replace these quickly. CPU can fry itself.

Re: Screeching Noise
it is likely a fan, my bet is on a Power supply fan, because they tend to die easier, due to high heat and high-dust conditions. it could also be the dreaded Dying Harddrive Bearing.

Re: Screeching Noise
After sticking my ear into the case, i have determined that the noise is coming from eiter the Power Supply Unit or the cpu fan, more so the Power Supply Unit because if it was a fan the noise would be constant, the noise i hear is not audible all the time. My Power Supply Unit is an antec true power quattro 850 watt. Thanks for you replies.

Re: Screeching Noise
then it sounds like the power supply fan. let me guess, the noise only comes on when the system is under heavy load, (i.e. gaming, video+photo editing, high CPU usage etc) which would place heavier loads on the power supply, thus requiring the fan to spin faster. it could also, but pray its not, be an electrical sound from the capacitors in the Power Supply Unit. i will do some research and get back to you.

Re: Screeching Noise
I cannot find any previous problems like this, so im guessing its probably just a bad fan. let me know if you have any more information

Re: Screeching Noise
Yeah Antec Quality has a five-year parts and labor warranty
What gets me is that you stated it is not consistent. I could see if the Power Supply Unit had 2 fans, one on each end. Then the one fan only runs when needed which would explain inconsistency. But after carefully inspecting the Power Supply Unit from HERE you can clearly see there is only 1 fan.

Re: Screeching Noise
Well its definately not the fan hitting against the casing because i stopped the fan with a pen and the sound continued, it is screeching right now, and i am using next to nothing of my intel E6850. The computer is new also so i very much doubt it has anything to do with dust or worn out fans or worn out hard drives. Thanks for your replies

Re: Screeching Noise
then, it is very likely an electrical capacitor issue with the power supply. do you have another power supply you can try in it?
