Could be a heat-build up -- when the side panel or door is on the case the internal temp rises just enough to cause the failing part to become noisier.
A failing bearing in a fan-motor or harddrive could be this sensitive to temp-fluxes.
I would suggest you download HD tune:
HD Tune
it will confirm or eliminate the drive issue-- if it eliminates it-- great-- if not-- you'll want to backup files right away.

Did you run the error-checker tool in HD-tune ? Run the normal version-- it takes a while-- but it's more thorough
Or are you just going by the normal temp-display ?

Cooling fan-- could be case fan/CPU fan/ Video card fan/ Power supply fan--

Speedfan--http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php

is a good little free temp monitor-- however -- it is not perfect-- nor are the sensors they build into motherboards-- if you see some really ludicrous temps-- the sensor is bad -or incompatible with speedfan.

if you go into your BIOS-- there maybe a "hardware monitor" tool ... you could check your CPU temp and be pretty sure it's accurate

One odd thing I would suggest is to find a stethoscope-- that way you could try to figure out where it's coming from--- some auto mechanics use them to pinpoint/diagnose burnt bearings.bad pushrods etc. Those have a solid metal rod where the doctors chilly pad would be

thanks for your replies, i have used speedfan before and have found that the nvidia control panel i got with my gpu is better for analysing temps, the noise is not present at this time but when it starts i shall get the temp monitor on the go and shall report back

Hey, at this present time, the noise is audible, cpu is 27 degrees, system 33 and gpu 54, all relatively cool temps, cpu fan is low rpm- around 1600. i really think its the Power supply, when the pc is off (but not when the power supply is off) it makes a buzzing noise, i would appreciate further input to my problem, thanks

If you think it's the Power Supply Unit-- at this point I'd tend to agree... especially if it makes noise when the system's powered down.
Fortunately decent Power Supply Unit's can be bought fairly cheaply.
Newgg now offers a free Power Supply Unit calculator...but they don't ship to UK

Newegg - Power Supply Calculator

or there is Extreme's...
eXtreme Power Supply Calculator v2.5

I generally add at least 100 watts for a safe margin.
Be sure to add in all your hardware-- including peripherals (USB draws some power)

Please do yourself a favor-- buy a good-quality brand-name...there's a lot of junk out there

well i thaught that antec were good, i dont know if this is linked but the last couple of days the pc has been turning on, while i was in bed, it turns on without me pressing the power button, so i have to turn off the Power Supply Unit power button so it wont start up.

I would say the Power Supply Unit also, when you disconnect the power cord to the back of the PSU that noise should go away. I have seen this before and it is the PSU that is at fault.

I use Antec Power Supply Unit also, never had any issues with them. I also use this little ATX which has great reviews.
