I've had my pc for maybe two years, and have recently realised that my pc makes a lot of noise. The case is an antec sonata 2, which if i am not mistaken is meant to be dead quiet. My cpu is a intel p4 3.20 ghz and my graphics is an ati radeon x1300, maybe they make it noisy. I did pay a lot of money for the "quiet" case and i know that it is meant to be quiet as i know of people who have said it is. So i would very much like to see if you have any suggestions to make my pc quieter. Thanks

Hi DerekJerry and welcome to PCHF

Sonata II is quite a quiet case although it could get loud over time if it is not clean. Check for dust inside the case and on the components, then if needed get a can of compressed air and blow the dust out.

Also, try to tie down exactly where the noise is coming from - that way you'll find it much easier to eliminate it.

Thanks for the replies and the welcome, the noise is coming from the main case fan. Also i downloaded speedfan and was alarmed as it had temperature 3 was around 50-60 degrees celcius and the fan was at 0 rpm, i thaught it was the Power Supply Unit fan but when i saw it working, speedfan still showed it as being a 0 rpm and the temp was still high, do you think this is a contributing issue?

Don't think Speedfan is detecting that very well

If its the main case fan does it have lots of dust on it?

Also what type of noise is it, e.g. whurring, rattling ?

it is a whiring noise and i think it does have dust on it, i never knew that could make it louder, how does that happen?

I have taken your advice and blown the dust with some compressed air but it still seems to be loud, and off the topic i was on speedfan and i also double checked on the dxdiag and it says i have two cpu's. I thought the intel p4 was one cpu, do i really have two?

Well I'm guessing a lot of the noise is down to the processor, especially if it's a prescott core which were very hot and power hungry, I'd look into re applying the thermal grease and getting a new heatsink/fan for it.

And no you don't have two processors, it'll be either dual core or have HT [Kind of virtual dual core]
