Default [Answered] With side panal on hard drive gets hot

Hello all! My dad recently got a new case for me. With the side panal on my hard drive gets extremely hot, usually 58c
Now I just took the side panal off and it is staying on 42c! So i'm guessing the case I got is rubbish? Is it safe to keep the side panal off?
Dust is not a huge problem because the case is not touching the carpet (it's on wood) and is in a slot inside my desk.

Thank you

If you have some spare cash a hard drive cooler can help - there are some beauties here: Quiet PC UK - HDD Soundproofed Enclosures to Silence your Hard Drive - and Zalman is a product we regularly recommend here.

OR

You can look at the available fan mountings in your case and add extra fans to add air flow in and back out of the case...

Thanks for the quick reply Hengis
I currently have no money after having spent £600 on some hardware upgrades.

I see no need for cooling when the side panal is open so my question is, can it damage anything if the side panal is off?

Absolutely not..so long as NOTHING goes into the case (fingers, pens, water etc..etc...). I remember a hot summer a couple of years ago where my PC's side panel was off for 3 months. Just check regularly for dust build up and you should be fine.

Thanks that's all I wanted to know I heard it can screw the air flow up but wasn't sure if that could cause any damage.
Once I get a job this summer (after exams are over) i'll look into buying a hard drive cooler.

Thanks again for your help.

No probs. It's certainly not good for the air flow but it seems to me that you are going to have to comprimise somewhere
