no, it gets to that directory ok.

all of the other ones copied from \repair\
software
sam
security
default

It just says it cannot find "system"

I tried retyping it a couple of times in case I maybe entered it wrong, missed a "\" or something - no go.

to add to it - I typed "dir"

and in the \repair\ directory I did find a file called system.bak

Really? The .bak files should have been the ones renamed in the \config\system rather than the \repair\ folder. is this the only .bak file you see in the repair folder?

yes - and it has a 2004 date on it . . .

Alright, let's copy that one over too: copy system.bak c:\windows\system32\config\system

at last - it boots to windows.

a lot of problems now - it will not recognize the mouse, will not let me open device manager, and the users are all gone - just has "owner".

But I'll see if I can at least back up the important stuff then work on sorting.
