If were successful in performing these steps in the Recovery Console, you won't need to use the XP disk to do a repair install.

The reason for the reboot loop is because it sounds like you only made it half way through the procedure. The fact you had to go back and do the "ren software software.old" doesn't really matter because you didn't get as far as the "copy software C:\windows\system32\config\software" command? If so, you just need to complete the rest of the procedure:

cd \ 
cd windows\repair 
copy system C:\windows\system32\config\system 
copy software C:\windows\system32\config\software 
copy sam C:\windows\system32\config\sam 
copy security C:\windows\system32\config\security 
copy default C:\windows\system32\config\default

At the moment, Windows can't boot because all of it's config files have been renamed to .old, so when it tries to boot, it can't see anything. Once we have restored a working copy from the repair folder, you should be able to boot again.
