Exclamation BSODs Freezes Errors OH MY!!!

I just did a clean install of vista today, and of course had trouble from the get go. I'll try to keep this as short and direct as possible and save specifics once they are asked about.

Here's where I sit. I have vista installed. I started getting bsods as soon as I entered into vista (meaning right after I did the couple start up questions ie my name, pc name, and what settings to use etc) I have all the .dmp files but yet I can't upload them due to the system telling me I don't have permission to (when im the admin). Each time I try to install updates, at some point during the updates I get a bsod. Each time I could actually download and allegedly install some updates, once I entered back into vista, I stops on the configuring screen (the 3 step screen). Stops as in, it would be sitting on step 1 at 0% then all of a sudden goto the next screen where I pick the user, and another way of stopping is in a system freeze.

Since I can't upload the .dmp files all I can give you is that two of the bsod errors ended with

...001E and ...003B

(I'm actually at that step now, the system won't go past the update config screen) Before, when I could get into windows, I couldn't install a couple of my programs, even with downloading the latest drivers or files/edition from the net.

I'll list more specifics if asked, but the question I have right now is.....should I just wipe it and start again? Perhaps something went wrong with the initial install?

Thanks

err, hi GD,

Little confused here. You installed Vista.. how does this resolve the your RAM issues from the last thread?? You need to get these issues resolved first, and then perform a clean install.

As for Vista, being a computer admin is a little different than being a computer administrator, which is an account which is disabled in Vista by default. Vista is very restrictive.. a nightmare in terms of permissions, and there is a feature in Vista known as UAC (User Account Control). What this does is give your apps the absolute minimum access they need to run. It's a feature that is meant to protect your PC from harmful software and malmare, but it's one of the reasons why Vista is disliked by many users, not to mention software developers. It is one of the reasons why I very quickly removed Vista and returned to XP, and probably why Microsoft was so quick to release Windows 7.

You can however disable UAC, by going to Start > Control Panel > User Accounts, and click on Turn User Account Control (UAC) on or off, and then clear the check box on the next page, then OK.

Once UAC is disabled you'll be able to upload your logs. However, there's really little point if RAM issues have not been resolved. I'm willing to bet my right eye these logs are going to show the very same problem!

Yes I'm very aware (reluctantly I suppose lol) of the UAC and how restrictive vista is. However I already gave permission on those files but yet it still didn't work.

As for the memory problem, I mentioned I actually have new memory now, so if anything I just need to verify that I have these memory settings correct.

Being that these problems could be tied in with the memory, I can post what I have, but if I need to start a new thread with the new memory, or even reopen my previous thread, by all means let me know.

It's just killing me that my pc is down again

(By the way, Win 7 is on the way )

No need for new threads, don't worry. But have you tried a memtest86 since replacing memory? It didn't look like the memory itself was at fault during your last thread, as you tested each stick individually and all was OK. Just looked like you needed to get voltages and timings correct. The only hardware issue we didn't rule out was the motherboard slots themselves. For that, all that is needed is to test one stick in each slot.

That is the only kind of test I didn't do, testing in each slot. Being that I'm now using 2x2gb setup instead of a 4x1gb, and I did test the two slots I'll be using with this kit.

Here is a direct manufacturer link to the RAM I'm using....

OCZ Technology | Products | Memory | OCZ DDR2 PC2-8500 Reaper HPC Edition

So I don't pull a blond moment, I do see the settings on there as 5-5-5-15 but also seen both a 1.8v on a prior screen dealing with mobo compatibility and 2.1v-2.3v on the linked page.

By the way, Win 7 is on the way
It's already out! It was released to the general public a few days ago, but businesses with things like volume licensing have had 7 for a little while. If you already have Vista, you can order the upgrade direct from Microsoft: Windows: Windows 7 Upgrade Option

Ohhh, that's very nice choice in memory GD. So, just to confirm, with both of these sticks installed, memtest reports no further errors? if so, UAC should have given you access to those minidump files, something screwy must be going on with those permissions. See if you can copy them from that folder, onto the c:\ drive itself, and upload them from there.

LOL, no I meant it is being shipped to me as I speak I got the free upgrade when I purchased vista.

I'll post results once the tests conclude with the new memory.

edit: during the first test, memtest actually froze. the pc became unresponsive

edit2: the second attempt of memtest and in under a minute of testing, it showed 25 errors and at about 90 or so errors memtest froze yest again.
