Solved: BSOD - XP problems

System restore won't complete even in safe mode. Unable to access help and support. Sometimes BSOD. Only other problem and may not be part of this is that WAOL sending a message that a file is missing from Mscoree.dll. Have reinstalled AOL three times after three uninstalls, one from registry. AOL now unable to help. Dell wants me to restore notepad back to factory condition, but reluctant to do that because Fn tests all showed pass execept one (colour). Any help would be appreciated.

In Safe Mode click Start > Run > type in sfc /scannow (note the space before the /)

You need the XP CD in the drive to complete the System File Checker.

does your system restore give you a error, or does it just keep running? if it gives you a error , post it back on here please. also do you get the BSOD during the restore, or just while on windows ?

Dell wants me to restore notepad back to factory condition, but reluctant to do that because Fn tests all showed pass execept one (colour).

can you please give more details on that , not sure what notepad has to do with this ? but thats why I'm always learning!

Thank you both for your comments. I don't have the XP CD because it came installed on the Dell laptop. Perhaps that's why the Dell rrep wanted to do a PC restore

I am not sure what you can do without a disk. They are really important for when Windows gets messed up...which happens more often than you might think.

I suppose what you could do is if you KNOW which file is missing, do a google search for it. eg it will probably be something.dll. Then you could just copy and paste them to either C:\Windows or C:\Windows\System32 (or both to be safe)

Of course you still need to be in Windows to do that...my advice is to "obtain" or otherwise buy a Windows XP disc. Maybe someone you know has one?

I know what file is missing in mscoree.dll so I will work on that and see what happens. Thanks very much.
