Ah!
It's working! Fixmbr must have gotten rid of the stuff Dell put in the partition table which made it unable to find the correct partition (the boot partition used to be partition 1, but after formatting the drive it is partition 0) when booting up. So what solved the problem was: FixMBR in recovery console Restart installation Delete partition, L, enter Install on unallocated space with quick NTFS format And now the second part of setup has started. This is using the retail Home Edition CD, now let's see if the key works...

I haven't installed any drivers yet.
The CD key doesn't work, but I'll find a solution to that ![]() THANKS for your quick help, I had never thought this would get resolved so quickly! Once again PCHF exceeds my expectations, and can expect another donation.

need to confirm the hard drive in the PC is it SATA drive or IDE lots of people with this problem trying to reinstall XP on a SATA drive with this 5000 series.
