Default BSOD - help needed

Hi everyone, I'm having a particularly tricky BSOD problem which I can't figure out. I received this screen on switching my PC on on Friday

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2271/...7b8daa7d_b.jpg

I'm using XP home edition and unfortunately I don't have the OS disc. I can't get any further beyond this screen so I can't get to the dump file to attach it. Safe mode in any form won't work, as it will either go back to this screen or restart. I'm on my mother's PC just now, which is frankly embarrassing.

Any advice will be appreciated! Thanks in advance

After researching your problem, it seems most people receive it from two main causes.

Either it's a memory timing problem, which is generally resolved by going into the BIOS, memory, timing/speed and setting it to Sync instead of Optimal.

Or, a much easier way, is to update your video card drivers.

I will continue to research this for other potential fixes.

Ninja-Edit:

Another way of fixing this is, in the event the file is corrupt, you can restore it by copying it over from your Windows XP CD in the folder i386 (on CD) and copy it to the Windows\System32\drivers on your HD.

Thanks for the replies, I'll have a go at some of the suggestions as best I can. I still can't access the dump file since I can't get into the control panel. Is it possible to get to them via recovery console?

Have you tried to going into BIOS and loading fail safe and defaults save and exit?

Restart repeatedly tap F8 on startup and choose either safe mode or last known good config.

Have you installed any new hardware lately or do you remember updating any drivers?

Try those first.

Safe mode doesn't work every time I try, it either goes to the blue screen or restarts. Last known config brings up the blue screen too. I can get to the BIOS but I'm afraid I cant see anything about loading fail safe and defaults.

I haven't installed or updated anything in ages, so I don't think its that...
