Default Help with a boot or bios virus.

So i'm having some computer laptop virus, it might be a boot or bios virus. I have taken my laptop to computer "experts" but they could not figure out what was wrong. I have tried to reinstall the OS, Windows XP, but it does not work. When its creating a partion or whatever on the percentage bar on bottom it stops around 60% and just stays there forever, I know this is a problem, because I have reinstalled the OS before. The computer people also told me they did that and did have any luck, they also showed me. On the bios, it shows:

IDE Adapter 0 Master [None]
IDE Adapter 1 Master [CD-Rom]

The first one should be the hard drive but its not there. and after you boot the pc and let it load or whatever, it goes black for a couple of seconds then the Intel Boot Agent loads up, it shows:

Intel (R) Boot Agent Version 4.1.08
Copyright (C) 1997-2002, Intel Corporation
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel Boot Agent.
Operating System not found.

I have no idea what this means, well except for the last part, but I am unsure why. Can someone please help me.

Hello and welcome to PCHF,

I'll mark this thread open so it attracts our highly skilled tech staff.

Have you tried a different hard drive?

Thank you. And well for a new hard drive, no. I don't have money to buy another one. My laptop started with a 20 GB hdd, and then i needed a new one, so I bought a 60 gb and the bios did not read it it, so it did not work, I returned it. I bought another one, a 120 GB, the current one.

hello synful

do you have a desk top system you could try the hdd in ?
you would need a 2.5" to 3.5" ide adapter , you would need to know if it is a sata drive or an ide form to get the correct adapter type ,
in doing this you will be able to find out if this hdd has crashed and attempt recovery of your data or also find out if it is the hdd controller on the laptop which is suspect,
you could take it to a computer repair shop and they should be able to diagnose this for you too.

re: pxe boot agent .... the system will search for the first available boot device usually the hdd , if it doesnt find it it will search the next boot device in the list which is usually the cd/dvd , then onto the next device which is pxe boot agent is a local area network boot device it is searching for and cant find a boot device anywhere hence "operating system not found"

What that means is that since it doesn't find an OS on your hard drive that next it was looking for a network boot (kind of a minimal OS that it loads from a networked computer) and it's not finding anything to load from the network.

What makes you think you have a bios virus? To me it looks like your laptop just isn't compatible with the larger hard drives. The best way to fix that would be to check and see if there is a bios update for it. On the very remote chance that you do have a bios virus flashing a new bios should eradicate it (sorry Crush, hopefully I didn't overstep my bounds by saying that). The last I heard though, to get one of those the person has to have physical access to your computer to install it.

@ fixit: i was able to borrow one of the computer people's cable so i could access the hdd on a desktop pc, but it did not work. the pc did not recognize the drive. I am probably going to take it to a repair shop this weekend.

@ Xeno1: The computer people that i took my laptop to, told me it was probably a bios virus. You say that the hdd is probably incompatible with my laptop...well the new 120 hdd i got was brand new and it worked on my laptop...but i was downloading songs...and i am over 100% sure it is where i got a virus from. I have read about flashing the bios..but i do not understand anything on that.

OK, I was a little outdated on having to have physical access to your computer to install a bios virus. Since that's the case I'm going to have to bow out of this and leave it for the security analysts.

If you do want to try and flash your bios though, go to your laptops manufacturers website and look up your laptops make and model for bios updates and it will have explicit instructions on how to do so.
