Sorry, AntiVir may be free, but it definitely works more as a placebo rather than an Anti-Virus Program.
From what I learned there is no proper free anti virus program. I would try to find a time limited trial version of a program with costs. |

Strongly disagree with Gamling.
If you like take the view that AVG Free is the trial version for the version you can purchase. So I'd agree with Jelly Bean.

I have used AVG free version for years. No issues. Combine that an anti-malware or two, and a firewall in place - all is good.

Hi Noway,I concur with elpmek, sorry Gamling, but in my experience, the best companies make a free home version of their anti-virus programs, and charge for basically the same program to companies, that's how they stay in business, and offer quality free products. I've been using Avast for years, and have no problems. That being said, if you have been infected, you should make sure that you are completely free of malware before trying any new software, regardless of who makes it. Our Security team is expert at making sure your PC is free and clear before getting you started again with an anti-virus, several anti-spyware, and a firewall to protect you from being infected again. So, if you are looking for a new AV because you have been infected, please follow the instructions for PreWork in my signature, and post back with the resulting logs so that our Security Team can help make sure you are clear, before you install anything new. Looking forward to your reply, TTFN LGW

AVG free is not very effective compared to payed anti-viruses. But there are better ones out there. I suggest using Avast home edition for free and comodo with the firewall is strong too. Webroot desktop firewall is not free so try that firewall out. I think it would be good to pair up webroot desktop firewall with avast home edition. Malwarebyte's anti-malware is a good tool to have. SUPERAntiSpyware is a good tool to have too. Those programs are effective free programs.
