Chris, (hey, that's my name too!)

It depends on what you are trying to target. There really is no "best" piece of software since all the scanning engines are different. For Anti-Virus I'd go with AVG. Anti-Spyware you are good with Spybot S&D. Anti-Adware go with Ad-Aware. AVG functions as a firewall as well blocking trojans and nasties.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is also one of the best programs I have ever seen. Its scanning engine is such that it targets all of the above with one scanning engine but, it is not a targeted fix for any one infection. It also has the drawback of not having realtime protection (which AVG does)

All in all I think all these programs should be in your aresenal with AVG being the only one running any realtime protection.

You're welcome. Any more questions let me know. I have included download links for all the programs below. Additonally, I added a section on Online Scanners and other tools I use.

Malwarebytes:

AVG 8:
Download From Here:

Ad-Aware:

Spybot S&D:
Download From Here

Additionally, Below are some other tools I use

Online Scanners:

I have found also there are several online scanners which pick up infections none of these programs pick up on. Some of them I like besides your BitDefender one are:

Free online antivirus. Download ActiveScan 2.0 and clean your PC. Panda Security

and

VirusTotal - Free Online Virus and Malware Scan

VirusTotal allows you to upload a file you expect is infected and it will show you the results.
