Here's an exert from an article in which the author explains why running more than one antivirus at a time is a bad idea:

In general this is a terrible idea. Running multiple security applications at the same time, particularly anything that runs in real time like antivirus or firewall programs, can wreak havoc on Windows, crash your computer, give you many headaches, and, in the very best case, merely slow your computer to a crawl.

The problem is worst with antivirus programs, which is designed to keep constant tabs on files being changed or created without your knowledge. But since antivirus programs are constantly doing this kind of thing behind the scenes, there's a good chance one program will try to block the behavior of the other program, and vice versa. The result could be a catastrophic failure of both applications (leaving you without any protection), or just general instability in Windows. This is so common that if you try to install one antivirus app on top of another, many installers will warn you not to do so.

Yes, Pgh...BUT:
GData Security Suite uses 2 antivirus engines for 2 years now (one is Kaspersky).
Some AntiSpyware Suits come with their own Antivirus engines, and provide what they call "Kernel compatibility mode", which is required if one wants to have both engines running (real-time protection).

This is also the case with me:
I have Norton IS 2009, and Spysweeper with antivirus.

Concerned about my system's stability I inquired the Spyseeper support, and they told me that ONLY if I enable "Kernel compatibility mode", could I switch their Antivirus engine on.

I have no issues whatsoever, and have this configuration running for almost a year now (you can see my system's specs on My PC )

That told, I do not recommend running 2 Antivirus engines, as no two systems are alike, and what works (?) for some does not necessarily mean it will work for others

ok so if i want the flexibility of scanning my drive with my norton, then a full scan with kapersky, I should disable any auto features kapersky might have??? I want the ability to use more than one for safetys sake. I just got some kind of virus that norton found but I can no longer use autoplay, or open any of my drives from the my computer window by double clicking. I have to right click open. But in theory turning off all auto protect features should work right???

Hi Your not supposed to run 2 A/V's if you want a second scan use an online scanner or remove the hard drive and scan it in another PC with different A/V

I run several AV's just disable any realtime protection on all but one. Here is a list of some of the more popular freeware apps:

7 you would want to "disable any realtime protection" or you might be waiting a while to bootup
