Question Question re Anti Virus and Security

I have recently replaced AVG free 7.5 with AVG Free 8.0.

Is AVG free 8.0 a good system or is there something better ?

Do I need some Spyware as well or does AVG Free 8.0 provide enough?

If not can anyone recommend good Spyware.

There is something called Widows Defender in my Windows Vista - What does it do ? - and do I need to turn Windows Defender on or will it conflict with AVG.

Control panel shows I have Windows Malware - Is that enough for malware?

Is there anything else I need in the security line to keep me safe?

I don't want to complicate things but I want to keep safe.

Hope someone can help!

Hello,I have on my Vista computer, windows defender,AVG8,windows firewall.

I am protected as long as I am fully updating all software.

For extra spyware protection you can download this:Spybot - Search & Destroy - Free software downloads and reviews - CNET Download.com

I have Spybot also.

You should be fine with all of the above.

Thanks - That's fine.
I have Windows Firewall and have turned on Windows Defender and am happy with AVG .
Will have a look at Spybot to counter Spyware.
I am reassured by your advice
Just one question - What is adware? - Should I be concerned about it - If so do any of the above items cover it or do I need something else?

Adware/malware/spyware/virus/email scanner protection are included with AV8.

They are all a form of spyware, well adware. They can be used in some cases to trace your surfing time and what you visit on websites and what websites.

Some things can be pritty harmless but others can of course ruin your computer.

Malware - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Spyware - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Computer virus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Adware - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

There I hope this helps?

That's reassuring that AV8 covers them.
Will look up the references as I am keen to learn.

You are most welcome,AV8 also has a link scanner.

If a link is with a green tick it usaly is fine but again no one knows what is ever stored on a webpage.

If you see a greyish brown ? then stay away from that site.If you visit one of those sites that uses illegal software or downloads AVG8 will give you a warning about this and ask if you want to continue or not.

But it all comes down to safer surfing. If you do not head the warnings and still download that file and you could get infected.

But hey we have a great security team here as you can tell by all the fixed HJT.

Surf the foum you can learn so so much.
