Default Using AVG and norton together

Currently i'm running norton internet security and I have had no problems. But I was wondering if I could download AVG free 8.0, disable all the active protection options and simply use it as a on demand scanner. I know its unwise to have two active protection but how could I make AVG inactive?

Hi there and welcome to PC Help Forum

Why would you need to have AVG if you already have Norton running? Personally, I would make a decision - AVG or Norton...with the FREE, excellent AVG being my choice. You're right, it's both process heavy and fairly pointless to have two accomplished AV products installed.

Hi and welcome, Chris.......not to step on any toes here, but having dueling A/V's can actually compromise your system as well, as they can cancel each other out to the extent that neither will be able to work to their full capacity, leaving your computer vulnerable.

thanks,

v

Personally, I would stick it out with Norton untill your subscription wears out. I'm not going to say that I like it or anything but if you've paid for it you may as well get what you paid for. When your subscription wears out then I'd go with AVG Free. If you are looking to pay for another subscription I'd go with BitDefender.

One note is that the Add/Remove Programs applet in windows XP (Programs and Features in Vista) will likely leave remnants of Norton behind so when it comes time to remove it, make sure you go to Norton Redirect - Symantec Corp. and run the Norton removal tool, otherwise you're going to have to manually remove registry entries.

Yep -- I suggest you choose the one you like best, remove the other--and if you want a 'second opinion' once in a while go run one of the free online scanners. Almost all the major makers offer a free scan online these days (disable your installed one first)

Agreed-I would choose one or the other. As mentioned-once your subscription to Norton expires you can always switch over to AVG 8.0 or a different anti virus software. Personally I would suggest NOD 32 or Kaspersky.

Antivirus Software - Eliminate viruses with ESET NOD32 Antivirus and ESET Smart Security
Antivirus Software: Kaspersky Lab - Protection Against Malware and Cybercrime
