Default [Resolved] Rps: The parameter is incorrect?!

Hi guys,

There is a problem with the family PC downstairs and I have no clue about it. When it loads up into each of our accounts the window pops up.

Rps

The parameter is incorrect.

We click OK and then Virgin PC Guard doesn't load up so I'm guessing it's a problem with it. Does anyone know what's going on? I'd prefer it if this got dealt with quickly. My Dad is quite paranoid about going online without virus protection.

Whatever happens, my Dad wants to keep PC Guard. I'll only get rid of it if it is absolutely necessary.

Hi Bikkit, welcome to PCHF

I don't know much about that particular error, I'm sure someone else does here however. First off have you tried disabling PC Guard on bootup, to make sure that it isn't causing the problem? I would recommend doing that just once, you can disable internet access if you're worried about that too. It's probably best that we get to the root of the problem and then we can decide which steps to take in resolving it.

Sorry to sound like a total newbie but how do you disable it on bootup? I've never done something like this before so please excuse me.

No problem dude, if you go to your start menu and click on Run..., type in 'msconfig' (without the quotes obviously). A window will appear, click on the startup tab second from right. The PC Guard should be in that list somewhere with the a check placed in it's box, you want to locate that and uncheck it. Then click apply and OK, and restart computer.

Okay, it turns out Rps is part of the Virgin PC Guard system. Disabling it stopped the problem but now there is no protection until I start it again ^_^;

Command = C:\Program Files\Virgin Broadband\PCguard\Rps.exe

Location = SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run

I dunno if that'll help. Now we know that the problem is Virgin PC Guard, how do I stop it? Is it a simple case of re-installing it?

You could try re-installing it, and see if that fixes the problem. Or you could replace it, we'll be happy to recommend some excellent freeware alternatives for you. It's entirely up to you. If the problem persists after installing it again, then I'd uninstall it for good.

yes Avast! is good. AVG is another good bet. Let us know how you get on and what you decide to do in the end.

Okay, I went to download PC Guard again and it wouldn't accept my e-mail so I called the tech support. Apparently my e-mail address isn't on the server (PC Guard uses a different server. Inconvenient? I think so) and she said she has resubmitted my e-mail address and password to the server and I should try again in 2 hours.

Customer satisfaction gets a thumbs down.
