I don't use anti-virus myself, but of the free ones Nod32 or AVG are very good ones. Avoid Norton and Macafee.

PC-Cillin/Trend Micro is fairly competent as well

I've been using a free Anti Virus and a free Firewall for a good while now, and i've not had any issues.

For Anti Virus I use Avast:
Free antivirus - avast! 4 Home Edition

For Firewall I use Comodo:
Comodo™ Free Firewall Software Download

Two brilliant products, and they're free!

Have to agree with Avast. Amazing product I've been using it for a long while now
