Default PChelpForum recommended antivirus?

This site is saying that it reccomends to use AVG and then Hijack this.

I've tried countless antivirus programs, and still my computer becomes increasingly slower over the months. I remember the good old days when this thing could run so many things at the same time, now I can barely see my text update in real-time in firefox.

I've used norton Antivirus, it removed this huge infection that corrupted my entire system, but it was scanned from another computer only after it was completely corrupted, so it was lost anyway.

Then i tried Avast Pro, ocassionally catches petty viruses, but my computer still becomes increasingly slower with the months.

So my question is, why does this site reccomend AVG and HijackThis? What is so special about each of them? It recommends them in this "get rid of infections forever" article.

Howdy oharaandrewlp,

We suggest AVG becuse they do have a free version and it takes up the least amount of resources on your PC compared to Norton etc. I use the paid version and it picks everything off before it hits the gate.

Hijackthis is just a toold for when you get malware and such for users that know how to use that program. It gives a read out of allot of what is running on your pc so we can see what malware or viruses you do have on your pc. I would not suggest that if you do not know how to use HJT do not use it, becuase in the wrong hands it could kill your windows install and you would have to reinstall it.

As far as computers slowing down over the months that is a natural thing. Your computer gets bloated wth crud and temp files etc.. Get fragmented.
Have you used a program like Cleanup?
Download it in my sig and run it. It helps speed things along as well as a good defrag program
|MG| Diskeeper Lite 7.0 Build 418 is a good defrag program better than windows one..and free

hmm I see. AVG because it's free, not because this site thinks that it's the best.

I'm pretty sure I tried the one you asked me to use, it did nothing. I keep a real clean "ship" I do defrag, I delete temp. files, I use CCleaner, I remove many unneeded programs. So if that's all you think that i should do, then i guess there's something deeper with my problem.

Sorry but are you asking for individual recommendation or a "Site recommendation"? If you are looking for a site recommendation then you won't get one..we are not tied to any single piece of software and all members will have their own opinion.

If you are looking for an individual recommendation then a quick search of this site will reveal multiple threads dealing with this exact topic. Happy hunting

Microsoft Live one Care, gone down in price and is only 10 bucks, its microsoft (they dont sell bad stuff) and its updated all the time, i guess thats what happens when your owner is one of the richest people in the world. I worked at Circuit City for a bit as a tech and i recomended it to everyone, my dad has it on his computer, best friend has it on his, i have it on mine, avg is also good though, thats what i had untill i got live one
