i have found norton to be a very slow program. i reccomend the full-version of AVG Anti-virus Professional, and AVG anti-spyware, and ZoneAlarm Firewall (free version of ZA works great). before you install these, COMPLETELY remove ALL components of norton, otherwise there could be compatability issues which are common between these 2 programs. AVG will not slow your computer down like Symantec (norton) and McAfee, and Bitdefender do
AVG ANTIVIRUS Professional 7.5
AVG ANTISPYWARE 7.5
ZoneAlarm free System Firewall

I the free version of AVG anti-virus, but my parents recently got the full verion and it works very very well. Zonealarm is a very good firewall also

EDIT>> Also, if you do get AVG, make sure you buy it, as the trial doesnt last very long (anti-virus and spyware)

Older versions of Norton stuff had that "system resources hogging" stigma to them but the newer ones (including 2007) do much better in that area, so I'd think with some tweaking of your system you should get a better performance out of them.

These tips here refer to 2005 and 2006 versions specifically but I'd think the "Basic guide to optimizing system resources" might help with your 2007 issues too:
Computer runs very slowly after installing Norton AntiVirus 2006 or earlier

You don't really need NAV07 because it is included in NIS07 anyway...

I'd say, get yourself the NIS08 trial and activate it with your 07 key ... it takes up much less system resources.

Norton is slow, get rid of it, and use AVG and ive always found Comodo to be a very good firewall. Its free as well.

Personally i hate Norton - such a resource hog

Best thing to do is uninstall it - and throw it away - even a tramp looking through the trash would put it back lol
