Not a problem (now), but I hope the following saga might save somebody else some bother.
When my Norton Internet Security package told me it was due for renewal, I looked at the price and decided to try something else.
I downloaded the trial version of AVG Anti-Malware. I had read a few comments that AVG might not install if Norton was running, so I switched off as many options in Norton as I could, and then installed AVG, with the idea that if there were any problems with AVG, I still had 30 days of Norton left.
All seemed to go well until the first reboot, and XP hung at the Welcome screen, and did so every time.
I booted into safe mode, and removed AVG - the machine started fine.
I turned Norton back on again, and this time found the
Norton Removal tool, that they provide (shame you can't just do it from Control Panel...).
Removed Norton completely, re-installed AVG, and everything is working a treat.
So on my machine at least, Norton had to go completely before AVG would work.
