So I have the Norton Internet Security suite, which one would assume would offer protection unparalleled with the software being so mainstream and EXPENSIVE. But why, I ask myself (and anyone who might have input), with all of its features and capabilities, do Viruses and adware/spyware still get through to my computer? I will run a scan with PC tools, and find usually 30+ minor infections (tracking cookies), and then 4-5 medium infections (third-party something or other). But then Norton detects one thing. I know there may be settings that automatically allow those minor things, but still.

Anyway, sorry for the rant, but the question is: What is the best software available for the prevention/treatment of viruses/adware/spyware/anything that can hurt my computer? Input would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there, Norton can be a resource hog as it bogs your PC down and installs so many services to run, and for protection purposes. I find its best to have a range of software to help fight infections and protect yourself.

There's no best protection, so to speak. Norton is a popular software choice no doubt; but in my opinion, free anti-virus programs such as AVG Anti-Virus does the job equally well, if not better.

You may also require anti-spyware programs such as Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D as recommended by MadGamer.

And if you do decide to get rid of Norton Internet Security Suite, you will also require a good software firewall. I have a Firewalls FAQ here that may serve as a good read:

Besides Comodo as MadGamer suggested, I would also recommend that you try out ZoneAlarm, which is yet another free, excellent choice.
