Default 'Avast!' - Good or bad?

I am buying a new PC soon and have been recommended using Avast (avast! antivirus software - computer virus, worm and Trojan protection by ALWIL Software) instead of Norton or any other incorperated antivirus software. I am a bit nervous to use it as I haven't really heard of it before. Any good?

Avast is ok to use, in fact i would recommend it as it has real time and an on access protection scanner.

I'll agree with that. It also has a free version.

Avast has a good reputation--though I've never personally used it
Panda is also good-- as is AVG-- I have used both of these.
Norton-- I detest.

I totally recommend Avast! Sure, you have to renew your license every year, but the definition updates are automatic and run well, and the on-access scanning is very efficient.

I like Avast! and AVG. Either of those 2 are great and highly recommended as they are free!

Thanks,
Adam
