Default norton auto protect off!

hi, i have norton internet security 2007, and i get a message saying that auto protect is off.
When i go to basic security and to auto protect it says 'error' next to it and it has two options of turn on or configure. i have tried turning it on but this doesnt turn it on and starts live update but doesnt find updates, and configure shows that i dont have the auto protect ticked as on but when i tick it and press ok it doesnt do anything.
this all started when i done system restore and had to turn it off to do a system restore and cant go back. what should i do?
thanks to all help given!
Sam
