having been in pc's for a while and using many different AV, i've found that avast 4 meets my requirements fully. I have seen PC's compromised that have been running other AV software that just cant find/remove the infection, popped avast on, ran a boot time scan, then into safe mode and within a couple of hours the PC is clean. The good thing i find about avast is the on access protection, it keeps an eye on every file that is started on your PC and if its a dirty piece of software, it halts the action and asks what you want to do.

I kick myself that i recommend avast to my customers and never get a phone call asking me to come round and sort out that sort of problem, prolly lose a bit of business but at least my customers are safe.
