Default Slow PC & Antivirus help!

Hello!

My comp is running helluva slow. It's still fairly new and the spec is good:
- Acer Aspire T135 AMD Sempron 64bit 3100+ 80GB, Windows XP Home, 512mb + 256 mb RAM

But it's slowed down and slowed down more and more in the last few weeks, seeming to coincide with my norton antivirus running out, although this may just be a coincidence.

Anyway, i'm not overly taxing the comp, but even running only 2 programmes kills it. It also takes AGES to start up and i bit worried now. I am using AVG antivirus and scan all the time, and defrag all the time. Hard drives have loads of space left. Also, it keeps saying my virtual memory is low.

I should add that I have installed AVG but not uninstalled Norton.

What process should I follow? SHould I uninstall everything then install AVG? Should I uninstall norton and scan with another programme before installing AVG?

help! any ideas?

EDIT: Moved to Anti-Virus forum

Hi hrh

Welcome to PC Help Forums

Your last paragraph indicates nearly what you should do.
Uninstall all AV software thoroughly, re-install AVG then proceed from there.
Two AV programs running at the same time can cause serious conflicts.

ah fantastic thanks for that.

Would you be fairly confident that this is what is causing m pc to be so so so horrendously slow all of a sudden?

Norton is a serious system resource hugger and in my opinion total trash.
Do what I have suggested and if you still experience slowness on the pc then we will take this further.
