Default [Resolved] Strange Problem

Hi Guys,

I am not sure if this is the correct place to post my query, so if there are any moderators reading, please feel free to move to the appropriate section.

I have a home movie (no, not one of those!) and wanting to share it with a number of friends, I was unable to use my traditional means of doing so, which is to use a web based file sharing service such as Yousendit.com, Sendspace.com, etc. The reason for this is that the file, at 400+ MB, was too large for their free packages to allow me to send. At the suggestion of one of the people I was intending to share with, I split the file into 5 parts using Winrar. I had no complications doing so and duly set about the monotonous task of uploading all the separate bits. By the end of the day, it was done and all that remained was to send the download links to my pals. I did this final job and went to bed.

So...

Imagine my horror when I discovered that two of them said they'd received a virus - some kind of trojan horse - when they'd opened the second of the files! Having done a complete virus scan earlier in the same day and also having manually scanned the 5 video files individually, it said and STILL says 'no virus found'. I use the free edition of AVG, but I've always thought it was great, so how come I'm sending infected files to my friends when at my end everything seems fine? Should I be worried too in case there is something lurking undetected?

Any helps from you divine creatures would be greatly welcomed.

Kind regards,
Ian

Hi Ian

Welcome back to PCHF

I'm surprised your friends didn't scan the files before opening them.
If they practice this on a regular basis then it may be them who are infected by their own foolishness.
I'd ask them what kind of Trojan it was and then get back to us.

Hi Wolfeymole,

I wish I could say I was glad to be back!

I sent it to a total of 8 people and I think only 2 of them had downloaded and got infected before the others had even started. I've deleted the files just in case they didn't get the warning messages in time.

Having used the carbon copy function in email, they all got the links and subsequent replies together. This is what the first guy said, followed by the second man's response:

"I think I just got a virus worm from either opening the first file or clicking on the second file.
Not sure which. Did anyone else get this?"

"yep
its a Trojan horse Downloader.Agent.13.AI"

It's laconic, but hopefully enough to ignite something in that over sized head of yours!

Over to you.

Regards,
Ian

Ok
You have a look at this while I research that Trojan.

It's a bit vague but see what you make of it, it's a bit hard trying to describe your problem when googling.
By the way did you set AVG to "Scan all Files" not just "Infected ones"?

FALSE ALARM!

I've been informed that it was not my files at all, but rather the particular file delivery site I chose to send them with. Apparently when you go to download there are pop ups from external links and one of them was responsible for the virus.

Sorry for wasting your time. I appreciate the speed of your response in any case and please have a great Christmas and New Year.

All the best,
Ian

Please do not apologise for wasting out time, you have not, as this post will be viewed by others who may have a similar problem.

Have a good Christmas too Ian.

Marked as Resolved.
