These 2 programs are using 100% of my cpu and task manager won't let me disable them. Symantec has been no help, eg.uninstall and reinstall - no change. They have my 'puter weighed down.

Hi steve, welcome to the PCHF!
It sounds to me as if Norton has been compramised on your computer. Can you please follow the Prework link (in my signiture) and post the resulting logs back here? One of the security team will help you out.
