OK, DrewTB,

Let's back up a bit, what "virus" are you talking about? What is indicating to you that it is there?

Looking forward to your reply,

there is nothing on the hard drive. so i have my OS disk in, and start the computer to boot from CD.

a screen comes up saying
"Setup is inspecting your computers hardware configuration"

then an orange screen comes up saying

"Trend ChipAwayVirus has detected a boot virus on your hard disk
Press <enter> for more information (Recommeneded)
<C> to continue booting
complete virus protection for the enterprise
trend micro-http://www.antivirus.com

If i press <enter> i get

To prevent the data lost from your computer, trend chipawayvirus will restart your system
Insert a bootable clean floppy disk into your floppy driver
Press <R> to restart your system
<B> to go back to previous screen

I then put a bootable floppy in then press <R> it boots from floppy.

Ive also have the disk i created from bootdisk.com. I have 98se. the disk boots then copys some files onto the harddrive so im able to still use the harddrive

any help on this would be very good.

Hey DrewTB,

Guess what?!!!! Your Turn!!! LOL.

OK, I have to ask you a hard question, and it is important that you tell me the truth, is your OS CD a legal copy? What you are describing is a very common occurance with an illegal (bootleg) copy of a Windows OS, most commonly XP.

Look forward to your reply,

It should be. When I bought my first computer at the markets it came with the windows XP OS disk. It works fine on that computer, ive update features like remote desktop with the CD when it asked for it.

If it is a bootleg im going to be very upset.

OK, thanks for that. I am sorry, it is just that if I don't ask, I can't find out.

Alright, then let's look at updating your BIOS, also, I just located an interesting bit of information that may be at the root of your problem, this courtesy of PC World Forums.

Trend-Chipaway is antivirus "protection" built into the system BIOS. This can trigger false virus alerts when it doesn't recognise the operating system that you have installed.

It can be disabled by going into the BIOS.
Next locate the Virus Scanning feature. For machines with AMI BIOS, this is under the Advanced menu heading.
For machines with Award BIOS, check the Anti Virus Protection heading.

Locate Trend ChipAway Virus or Anti-virus option and change or toggle its setting to Disable.

Without making any further configuration changes, save the new settings and restart the computer.
I would still like to get your BIOS updated, can you please post the make/model of your PC, and I will get the BIOS and instructions on flashing for you.

Looking forward to your reply,

You could also try one of these apps to make sure there is absolutly nothing left on the HD incase it isn't a false reading:

or:
