Default .vxd error what is it and how to l correct it?? Please help....thanks very much

I have today removed my very old Mcafee Virus scan prof edition 6.0 in preparation for installing broadband and then installing a new virus scan and firewall. I am with AOL.

I must admit l don't like to remove or add stuff to the computer. If it's working fine l don't like to touch it. But, it was time to up grade.

I have removed the virus scan and now when l start the machine up it tells me
'windows registry or system.ini file refers to this device file, but the device file no longer exists.

c:\PROGRA`1\MCAFEE`2\SAFE&S"1\FBWIN95.VXD

cannot find file that may be needed to run windows application.

The computer continues to start up ok after you press enter after this message.
When l installed this software originally it was a pain and it looks like its have a final fling.

Can you help?????

I intend not to install broadband until l have solved this problem as l do not know if it will effect the installation of broad band.

Thanks very much for looking at this for me.

Hey Perfect Pancake,

Welcome to PCHF. You will find a world of experience in our staff, and I am sure that we can get rid of that nasty left over Mcaffee.

Let's start by first making sure that you have completely uninstalled Mcaffee. Please go to Add/Remove programs, and carefully look for any mention of Mcaffee. If found, uninstall it.

Next please download Spybot S&D and RegSupremePro from my signature. Once Spybot is installed, click on Mode, and choose Advanced. Now click on Tools, and select System Startup, again look for any mention of Mcaffee. Next click on Uninstall info, if anything shows up regarding Mcaffee, uninstall it.

Install and start RegSupremePro, it will want to make a backup of your registry, let it. Then click on the Registry Cleaning tab. Select Aggressive. When it has finished, click on Select, and choose All. Click on Fix, and let it fix everything that it finds.

Reboot your computer. Please post back with the results, you should no longer be getting any Mcaffee error messages.

Looking forward to your reply,

TTFN

LGW

If that doesn't help then manually delete the following register key:

1.Go to Start/Run and type: regedit.

2.Locate the following key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\VxD\FBWIN95

3.Back up the FBWIN95 key, and then delete the entire key.

4.Quit Registry Editor, and then restart your computer.

PS, i would advice to install a new AV and firewall before hooking up broadband because you will be infected with all kinds of malware in the first day if you dont. Very likely the first infection will be in just minutes if you dont have a firewall and fully updated windows.

An unprotected Windows PC has a good chance of infection in 12-16 minutes of connection to the web... last time I read an article on the subject.

I would say that you are very very lucky if you manage to stay clean for 12 minutes , if you are just a tiny bit unlucky then 12 seconds can already be enough.

An acquaintance of mine found out the hard way... she noticed a great slowdown in performance-- and her PC would start up by itself (in her bedroom) at night. Her brother who lived some distance from here-- worked in a IT department. He came here, discovered a bunch of porn files on her machine ( she was mortified) -- apparently she'd just changed to Broadband, and her machine had been "zombied" and used a porn server without her being aware of it (of course). It took some serious effort/several hours on her brother's part to get everything cleaned out. Now she has a firewall/antitrojan/antispyware and runs them all regularly.
