Default Uninstall Symantec Antivirus Problems

Recently purchased a Thinkpad Z60m laptop with XP Pro installed and Antivirus Corporate edition on a trial basis. I have a licensed version of AV 2006 I would like to install. Requires other versions of AV be uninstalled first. Did uninstall via the add/delete software Control panel.

Result is: Install wizard for AV 2006 still says the previous program is still there. Windows security center says it is not there. I can still boot the program but the scans do not run. I can (apparently) still up date the virus definintions. The AV program is missing from the list of programs to be uninstalled. And I can not find any address for Symanted Tech Support that does supportw a trial version. Ant suggestions would be greatly appreciated. It appears that I am now without virus protection and can't load a new program.

Hya CaptDunc.

One of these two links should be able to help you with removing Symantec/Norton:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...05033108162039

or:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/Norton_Rem...NRT_d4749.html

If those dont work , then do you know exactly what version and year of Symantec/norton AV it is?

Also is that AV2006 , Norton AV?

Default Problem uninstalling Norton AV version

The Symantec Antivirus program I am trying to uninstall is version 10.0.0.846. It is bundled inside Symantec Client Security. The only link to it is through Client Security and the uninstall attempt is for the whole package. This is the apparently the only way to do it. I have been running the uninstall tool you suggested from Symantec for over an hour...keeps saying "please wait". I suspect it is hung up on a corrupted file. This is the reason I wanted to uninstall in the first place...the program hung up. Client Security is not one of the Major Geeks listed programs

John, I really appreciate your advice and any other suggeations you might have.

Thanks for your help, Joe5. In my efforts to solve this problem I tried "System Recovery" and discovered it would not work. I have decided that the best thing to do is re-format the computer and re-install what I had put on it, which is not much since the computer is new. I suspect a corrupted OS and /or a virus that the Symnatec AV program did not catch.

One of the programs I downloaded to the computer is "Cute.pdf" This is a nice little program that converts documents to .pdf. I have used it for years on several computers...no problem. To save the program for use later I emailed it to myself to store on my PC. Oops! My PC AV program picked up a possible virus and would not let the email in. I rescanned the program running on my PC and it is clean, but the newly downloaded edition is contaminated, apparently. And the faulty Symantec AV did not catch it. So I may have stumbled on to the cause of the problems. Dumb luck. Thanks again CaptDunc

Afaik cute.pdf is indeed a clean and legit app , it could be that a virus of some sort is infecting emails that you send , so when you send an email to youreself then the returning email has an virus attached to it.

And to check you could upload both the original and emailed app to this site to check it out:

http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html

And if you haven't started to format yet , if you want we can also give it a go to remove any malware that might be on there. Just give a yel if you want that.
