I get this prompt whenever I try to uninstall the Free AVG from my computer (Windows XP):
Installer initialization failed due to following error:
Error: Initialization of the language file "C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG7\setup.lns" failed.
General failure.
Any help will be sincerely appreciated. PJ

Hya PjPerry72 , welcome to PCHF.


Give this a try:

1. Download the latest AVG Free installation package from [free.grisoft.com]
2. Run the AVG Free install file
3. Choose the Uninstall option and follow the setup wizard, when you get to the part to remove user settings, select it.
4. Restart your computer

If that doesn't work then try a full reinstall before uninstalling.

Hi: Thanks for the prompt reply. I can down the Free AVG, however my problem begins when I locate the downloaded file, and start the install procedure. That's when I get the prompt that "unable to install because there is a Free AVG already installed. Then when I go to uninstall the program from the "Add/Remove" Control Panel, I get the "Error" mentioned above. AnY further suggestions. PJ

Nothing works so far. Went to "free AVG forums." got their "Lets get radical, and do a complete new install step by step" using my Safe Mode. Printed out the instruction, and followed word for word, suppose I'll just get another virus checker and live with a version of Free AVG remaining in my Add/Remove Program file, Huh? PJ

Uh PJ, that doesn't sound like a good option. I mean you could do it, but there is obviously an underlying problem that needs to be addressed. My experience says that if you ignore it, it will affect something else.

I am curious, when Joe said that there would be an unistall option, did that not come up for you?

I have placed a trouble ticket in for you at Grisoft, and am awaiting a reply, I think that perhaps by replacing the listed file you may be able to move forward. I will post back once I have more information from them.

Thanks in your efforts to help. I went through the "IF ALL ELSE FAILS LETS GET RADICAL" procedure, again, in an attempt to uninstall AVG71free 371a669.exe, Version 7.1.371. At the point where I clicked on "Accept" at the "Acceptance Notice," I gOt the dialog box "Attention"...."ThIs Install Package cannot be installed because there is other version of AVG7,1 installed on this computer. Please, uninstall current version prior to installation of this package." While still in the "SAFE MODE," I went to the Control Panel, (Add/Remove), and again attempted to removeAVG7.1. Again I got the prompt "Installation Failed: Installer Initialization failed due to following error: Intialization of the language file. "C/ProgarmFiles\Grisoft\AVG7\setup.Ins" failed. Don't knOw much else I can do, Huh? Should you find some Other means to correct my problem, let me know. Anyway, Thanks for your continued efforts. PJ
