What version of Windows are you running?

now it opens in msdos
Does it open in MSDOS mode when you try to boot the computer up or only when you try and open MSN?

Try boot the computer into safe mode and check in ADD/Remove programs and delete anything that shouldn't be there.

Also if you have any anti-spyware software e.g Microsoft Antispyware or Spybot, try and run them from safe mode.

If it doesn't get as far as safe mode then let me know

Hi,

Have a similar problem, almost certainly caused by the same Messenger download. Now I can't access my anti-virus (I have Norton) or any anti-virus links - just goes back to desk top. Tried accessing Microsoft Spyware from their site but same again, back to desk top. Putting "virus" or "help" into search engines causes the same problem.

Also, found it difficult to enter some computer forum sites. This is the first one that has let me in and allowed me to register! From what I can gather, this virus is doing the rounds.

Anyhow, smiggerlfc how have you got on with solving your problem? Any tips? Anyone?

Now that you are here (and it's good to hear that we are THE forum at the moment ) Why not go to the downloads section and grab a couple of tools..

I would recommend:

Spybot

HiJack This!

CW Shredder

Run those and let us know what happens

Welcome to PCHF!

Cheers mate, and thanks for the welcome.

Tried your links. They all just open up for a fraction of a second, then close down. Virus seems to know that you're looking for help or a means of defeating it, but blocks you off.

It's not totally devastating as I can still get internet access and do most things.

Nevertheless, Messenger is now useless (isn't it always I hear you say!? It's my teenage daughter who will feel the loss, not me!) and there are a few odd things happening, like deleted email messages reappearing in my inbox. Also, when my son clicks on "Reyes" on the Sun's Fantasy Football site, it throws you out to the desktop again! All other players are ok. Bizarre.

Another clue: on starting Internet Explorer, a Security Warning window pops up for a second. Managed to capture it by using Print Screen. It says "The publisher could not be verified. Name: svhost.exe From: C:\WINDOWS". Tried looking for this file in Windows Explorer but can't find it. It's got to be related as this problem as it wasn't there before.

I found a report on an MSN Virus, not too sure if this is the same virus but worth a look.

The website is http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1760883,00.asp

I have attached the removal tool incase you can't download it. Also if you can't access the website let us know and I will post it on the site for you.

Have you tried booting your machine into safemode and running your antivirus from there as well as checking your registry and getting rid of any weird entries?
