Default [Answered] Virus.........Grrrrrr

I just helped my friend with his computer. Within a day, it was struck with a virus............ I installed Norton AV 2005, updated it, scanned and all seem well. Then suddenly, I couldn't surf the web (This page cannot be displayed) I scanned again and there was no result. I called up his ISP and the tech guy said it was a virus. The virus was preventing me from surfing although I am connected. Trouble is, I can't even surf a thing now, let alone download a solution. Any other solutions beside reformatting the computer? Thanks.

Default Virus.........Grrrrrr

Try booting the computer into Windows Safe Mode and run a virus scan from within there.
Whilst you are in there it would be a good idea to check the registry for anything out of the ordinary. Check the following folder in the registry :
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run

Viruses normally put an entry into the Run folder so that it is executed everytime your computer starts. Delete anything out of the ordinary.

I haven't used Norton since the 2002 version and you used to be able to boot off the CD and run a virus scan from the MS-DOS prompt. Try do this with your 2005 version. The only issue is that it could use old definitions.

If all else fails then try run the following, this will scan the system files and check for any inconsistencies

Go to START - RUN and type
sfc /scannow
For information on using the SFC check out these sites.

Could also try scanning for spyware using Spybot and Ad Aware. Then protect the computer from installing spyware by instralling a tool called Spywareblaster.

Default Virus.........Grrrrrr

also you can download the Stinger tool (as recommended here) : http://download.nai.com/products/mca...rt/stinger.exe

You won't need an internet connection to run it and it will find about 50 different viruses and trojans.
