Default Wireless internet PCI board

Hi this is my first post so forgive me if its not correctly titled etc.

We have 2 PCs at home. PC 1 has been connected to the internet for years, never had any problems, runs quickly (on virgin) and is fully protected with Mcafee, Anti-Spyware, PeerGuardian etc. My dad wanted to connect PC 2 to the internet using a Belkin wireless router. He connected it, it worked fine, not as fast as PC1 but hardly noticeable. Both PCs were running fine.

PC2 was saying that signal strength was low, so my dad reckoned it would be a good idea to buy something to boost the signal and speed the internet up, so he went out and bought a Serial ATA PCI Card. He fitted this into PC1 all correctly and for a day or so the internet on both PCs worked fine and PC2 was saying that signal strength was higher.

A few days later PC1 took ages to start up. Then when I would click an icon, whether it be Word or Recycle Bin the PC would freeze for a couple of minutes on egg timer then finally access the folder. The internet also moved really slowly. PC2 continued to run fast however, so didnt seem to be affected by the PCI card. Also when both PCs were running, PC1 would shut down the internet approximately every half hour (using either Firefox or IE).

Further down the line and PC1 shuts itself down and restarts itself on a regular basis, meaning it is effectively unuseable as it is so unreliable. I finally forced my dad to concede that this PCI card has knackered the PC and got him to take it out.

Now there is no PCI card and I also reverted to settings prior to when the card was installed (as the drivers may have been the problem). However PC1 still isnt running properly, the internet works fine and programs start as quickly as they used to, but Ive just been converting a DVD file for around 3 hours, and at 87% conversion the PC has restarted itself as it was doing previously. Over years and years of converting dvd files my PC has never restarted itself.

My question then, is what else can I do to remove any remnants of this board as I cant do anything on my PC, I am even CTRL+C'ing this forum message just in case the internet automatically shuts itself down.

Other symptoms include no cookies are remembered, meaning there is no autofill function on internet password pages meaning that I have to input them all over and over once the PC has been shut down. Another change is that it takes ages shutting down, it always installs 2 windows updates. I also can no longer start the PC with my portable hard-drive in the USB slot as it takes an age to startup and then proceeds to move with all the speed of Paul Scholes wearing high heels. Not good.

If anyone can help it would be much appreciated.

Hey, 'it takes an age to startup and then proceeds to move with all the speed of Paul Scholes wearing high heels.' LOL.

Any way, first, I'd check the no wires ect have gotten into the way of the fans, or have come lose at any time. if their ok, and there's no dust, give this pre-work ago.
