How do I make win xp recognize , read and write to a 720 Mb 2dd floppy?

I'm a bit confused what you mean by this statement, can you elaborate please.

Floppy disks are only 1.4MB in size.

Do you actually mean a 720KB floppy?

After further investigation there seems to be a program here that will allow formatting on all size floppies, look at the very bottom of the page.

Well, I am indeed trying to work some old 2DD floppies.
There is an old computerized textile machine wich accepts only 2DD disks. But there are only new computers runing new software so it is a kind of a workaround.
I managed to format the 2DD disks with a DOS command
specifing the traks and sectors. but I was looking for a way this format option will be avaiable in the "format" dialogue box.
I will look into the links you've found for me and summerize when I have the complete picture.
