I work on both laptop drives & desktop drives but hadn't used the cables in some time. Couldn't remember if it was just plug & play with the laptop drives - it is.

You shouldn't need the included disk at all. It is my guess that either you are having USB issues or the hard disk is completely dead.

My cable end that connects to the laptop drive has a light indication on it when connected to my desktop USB - even when no HDD connected. Does yours? If so, does it light? If not, either your USB connection is having issues (try deleting from Device Manager and rebooting to allow Windows to reinstall) or perhaps you got a bad USB to SATA/IDE cable.
