I'm new here and desperate. I was wondering if anyone has ever had this odd problem.
A week ago I put my PC into a brand new case. All seemed to go well and the PC seemed ok. A week later I was trying to get my broadband set up from Talk Talk when my problems began. While running the broadband installation CD, all seemed fine until it came to the point where I had to switch the modem on. Then suddenly i kept getting messages stating "Windows explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close". Other messages like this kept popping up for other things like Dr Watson and so on. Then the broadband installer then shut itself down. As long as the modem was switched on, Windows explorer kept closing itself down. This problem stopped when the modem was switched off. I tried this with a different modem and got the same result.
Then strangely, later that evening, I managed to get the internet working without any problems. Then, all of a sudden, the next morning while surfing the net, the whole PC shut itself down and will not turn back on. There are no lights, no power, nothing. The whole thing seems to have died.
This happened approximately 2 minutes after a USB lead was plugged into one of the front USB ports.
Does anyone have any clue as to what causes this strange occurence?

Hey Dave,
Have you tried powering on your pc with all USB ports free? It sounds a lot like an issue a friend of mine was having where the actual USB port got damaged and caused the computer to go into protection whenever something was plugged into it (hence no response when turning it on).

Thanks for your response but everything is fine now. It was nothing more than a broken power lead. I tried a new lead and everything sprung back to life. I feel silly for not actually trying that immediately.
