I just replaced the motherboard battery in my pc. I have a multiple hard drive/dual boot setup. Hard drive 1 = C: and Hard drive 2 = D:. When I started the pc after the battery change, I attempted to reformat D: & reinstal Windows which failed 3 times. The first time setup told me that an IE related file could not be installed & Windows may not function properly without it so I restarted the reformat/reinstall process again. I managed to get to setup having 23 minutes remaining & the pc froze. The four little squares in the bottom right corner stopped moving & the mouse was unresponsive. I started the whole process again & this time setup just stopped at 19 minutes remaining. The little squares were still moving and the mouse was still responding.
I removed the OS disc & restarted the pc again an loaded C: drive. On reaching my desktop, the "Found New Hardware" window appeared. I closed the window because I hadn't installed any new hardware. I used "Disk Management" to format D: drive then did a system restore using "DriveImage XML" from a backup I did a week prior. After restarting, D: drive also has the "Found New Hardware" window appearing.
I checked "Device Manager" & two items have a yellow question mark next to them. One is Ethernet. I don't use the internet on that pc & have never installed the drivers & have never had an issue relating to them. The other yellow question mark is next to "PCI Device". I only have a GeForce 8600GT graphics card & a Creative Sound Blaster 5.1 sound card installed. I reinstalled the graphics card, sound card & motherboard drivers manually & let Windows search the discs itself but the "Found New Hardware" keeps appearing.
I have 2 500GB SATA drives (backup), 1 40GB SATA (D: drive) and an 80GB (IDE drive) C:drive.
Any ideas on what is making the "Found New Hardware" window popup & how to get rid of it are greatly appreciated.
Thanx,
Shantelle.

Hi Shantelle,
Sounds like it needs the drivers installed for some devices did you install the NIC drivers? |

Hi Shantelle,My personal welcome to PCHF. It sounds as if, regardless of your internet connections on that computer, that you do have an ethernet or NIC card installed on the PC, and that it is trying to reinstall itself. Is it possible that you have it as an onboard on your MOBO? I will mark this as Open to have the Hardware gurus take a look at your situation. I would personally, run the Found New Hardware Wizard, to determine what it is that the PC is trying to install. Looking forward to your reply, TTFN LGW

madmatt2006 & ladygreenwitch, thank you for your quick responses.
I installed the Ethernet drivers but this made no change. I ran the "Found New Hardware" wizard & chose the "Install the software automatically (Recommended) 3 times. Once with the motherboard driver CD in the drive, once with the sound card CD in the drive & once with the XP CD in the drive. Each time the wizard said it was trying to install software for a PCI Device & each time it failed. Thanx again, Shantelle! |

Has this PC got on board sound as well you mention you changed the bios battery if so this may have been disabled in the past and since the bios battery change it could be re enabled in the bios. Looks like its either a sound device or maybe IDE controller did you install chipset software off M/B CD?
