working on a friends computer the problem is it keeps shutting down chamged the psu that seems ok not the problem cleaned out all the fans have noticed the heatsink seemed very hot. i cleaned out the heatsink i did notice that there was not much thermal paste between the heatsink and the processor. do you think that we need to put more paste on it. my friend told me that this shutting down problem has been going on for around 6 months, any ideas please.

Hi,
I've marked your thread as Open to encourage a response from the Techs..

Whilst we are waiting for them, replacing the Thermal paste with new may well help. If you could Download and run Speedfan and post the Temps back here we will get a better idea of what's going on

It's available here
http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php

Hello nigel and Welcome Back!

Yes you do need to add more thermal paste. This is because the thermal grease acts as a heat transfer from the CPU to the heatsink. Without it, the CPU will "burn" and that's what is causing your PC to shut down. But don't worry, it isn't hard to apply it. In fact, all you do is apply a thin layer around the outside of the CPU where the heatsink comes in contact and replace and you're done. Thermal paste shouldn't cost more than $10 max. If you run into any trouble along the way, don't panic. We will guide you through this troublesome time until it's fixed.

If you have ANY questions, please don't hesitate to contact us. We are here for you!

Hello guys.

Just an addition..

Right on the mark Jmarket.. a thin layer is all that is needed.

@nigel? Once you get that thermal paste all setup, please run Speedfan from my signature. This will give us a bit more of an idea as to what is going on.

Thanks for your patience

If this has been going on for 6 months, that CPU may be fried, but you can try more thermal paste don't over do it though, keep in mine what jmarket,Sir Trews and driver_ian have suggested....
