Default Keyboard acting WEIRD

So my parent's ask me to fix there computer since they were frustrated the wireless keyboard wasn't working.

The first thing I do is change the batteries, check the USB connection, and restarted the computer. No luck, the keys are still unresponsive.

Normally you would thing the keyboard is just broke right. But the audio buttons still work, and I can close programs with alt+f4,

Then I noticed weird occurrences taking place. When I opened MS Word up, at times the keyboard would work for a few seconds and then it would lock up on a character and keep printing to the screen.

And if I were to hit ALT at a time like that the menu would highlight like it should, but what would happen is like you were holding the right arrow button down and scrolling through all the menus.

I closed all the processes that didn't need to be running and made sure only to start essential programs on start up (msconfig), but even after another restart the same thigns happened.

I tried getting into the BIOS, but at the point the keyboard was unresponsive during boot up.

Other info that might be useful: windows vista home premium 64 bit, dell computer and keyboard

Welcome to the PCHF..........

Have you checked the device manager, and it has been in my experience that a part of a key board can work while some of the other keys will not function.

Also, you might have a wireless device interfering with the connection from the keyboard to the computer. Unplug your wireless adapter if you have one, and turn off bluetooth and move away cell phones. I used to have those errors with my iPhone.. although I thought they were tested so that didn't happen? Oh well. I hope that helps a bit. Try using a regular PS2 keyboard and see if it does the same thing.

Good Luck,

Andrew
