Pending: usb ports not reading

so, my new pc is up and running, and going well, but the usb ports don't show up in my computer.
they're in device manager (8 of them) so i know that they're recognised by the motherboard, but when i connect anything up into one of the usb ports, they dont read the device that i stuck in. except for one time, when it just decided to read my phone. i cant get it to work again, so any help would be greatly appreciated!
i've installed the mobo and all its drivers with the cd that came with it, there are usb 2.0 driverson the cd, but it wont let me install them because apparently if you're using service pack 2 or higher (i'm on service pack 3) the usb drivers are already installed.

my rig is p5q pro, q6600, xp, 4gb (3.25gb recognised)ram.

Try this:

Go:

Start - Control panel - System - (tab) Hardware - Device Manager.

At the bottom of that list that appears you should see:

Universal Serial Bus Controllers, click on the + sign to expand it.

You will see a list of your USB controllers, start from the bottom of the list, right click on each and select uninstall for ALL of them..

When you re-boot XP will re-discover your USB ports.

Report what happens..........

okay, i did what you said, and the usb ports all seem to work now, straight off, so thankyou very much.
however, when theres nothing in a usb port, it doesnt show up in my computer. this isnt a big thing, as as soon as you put something in, the drive shows up, but is there any way to remedy this?

holy cow your q6600 is at 4.6ghz!!! how did you manage that? i assume its water cooling

Yup, dual 120.3 dual-pass radiators with 1/2" high-flow loop cooling CPU and NB

I dial it down to 3Ghz if I don't need the speed though.. dumps out a LOT of heat otherwise
