Right, this is for my Uncle's PC, so I'll do the best to describe the problem.
When you turn the computer on, nothing appears on the screen. He has tried two screens and both gave same result.
Anybody have any idea what this could be?

System specs? Dose the hard drive sound like its doing anything? Onboard video or dose it have a video card?

How many video outlets does he have on the old PC? One or Two?
(Seen this before, in particular Compaqs)

I believe he has a Video Card in it, The PC sounds like it's working when it comes on.

Do you have another video card that you could place in his PC to test if his card has gone bad?
