Default usb hard drive

just wanna sat thanx to the person who answered my last question on this forum. ive lost the thread but appreciate your response.

my pc was as quick as i ever dreamed of when i first got it. so was my laptop. after quite a few downloads on both, of dodgy stuff (music files from limewire etc.), they both went from extremely fast to snails pace although i can still use them they are not what i ever wanted.
i changed the hard drive and increased the memory on my laptop and its speed is now as good as when it was when new.
i want to do the same with my pc with the hope of achieving "speed when new" but want to go about it like this. please, if anyone can tell me whether this is possible.
i dont want to take the pc apart and replace the hard drive which is installed as i dont want to re-install all the drivers that would be needed, and dis-connect and re-connect all the wires i have connected to my pc. i would rather, if possible, connect a usb harddrive, which has a windows xp os and install just the drivers i need to operate the pc for a specific purpose and if i need to go back to the old harddrive, which i will need to to transfer certain files, it would be just a click away. this would be done in the hope of getting my fast speeds, i had when it was new, back.

please, if someone could tell me whether this is possible.

thanx
