Default Tranfering my programs to another comp

Hi all, recently I have bought a new computer, but I really need to transfer some of my programs, folders and files from the old comp to the new one. I bought an external hard drive to do this, but the drive in my old computer is'nt working, so I can't run the software for the external hard drive for me to transfer all my stuff onto the new computer. I was wondering is there is any other method for me to transfer all my programs etc to the new comp? Is there like a cable where I could connect both comps to each other and do it that way? Help would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi,

If you are going to set up a network using the two computers anyway, you could use that to transfer files as well. The easiest solution is to use the external hard drive, what seems to be the problem with it exactly? You say the drive in your old computer isn't working, do you mean that the old computer doesn't work properly, or that the new external hard disk doesn't work in the old computer? Does the external hard drive turn on when you plug it in, and do any error messages appear?

Hi Jeroen, the external hardrive I bought came with some software which I presume you need to be able to run the external hardrive. The problem is that the drive on my old computer is'nt working, I can't play DVD's or use anything that requires to be put in the drive. So I can't run the software. The computer is'nt broken, just the drive is.

External hard drives cannot play DVDs, but I have a feeling I may simply be misunderstanding you.

If you can access your drive from the computer at all you can probably install software off of it.

Hello Tygra,Ok lets get something sorted here.

The disk that came with the hard drive may just be a driver install.

Does this external hard drive register in the computer without the broken rom drive? If it does see if it appears in disk management and format it via DM.

Then remove from the none problamatic pc and connect to problamatic computer see if it appears in my computer and see if it can be opened.

What make and model is this external hard drive?

Oh and by the way, most external HDDs are plug and play.

I agree chris,plug n play.

I was just thinking if we know the make and model we can check what would be on that disk?See if the disk is realy required to install some software for this external hard drive or just plugin and format and ready to use?
