Please help! I have a compaq presario v5000 that is no longer under warranty. the screen just went black on me while on line. when i tried to reboot, the "compaq" start up screen comes up for a quick one-second flash then the screen goes blank, but the computer is still on. I tried the recovery disks but this has not worked. what to do? or is this a lost cause?

Have you tried using a different monitor, or connecting the monitor to a different computer? You may also want to check the cable going from the PC to the monitor, it might just be hanging a bit loose. Does the computer do exactly the same thing every time you try to start it? What exactly happened when you tried using the recovery disks?
