Default USB Device Not Recognised

Greetings

Newbie to the forum.

I have a very strange problem & hope someone can help me.

I used to connect to the net on my laptop using a usb wireless adaptor, usb 2.0. I trod on the adaptor & snapped the metal plug rendering it useless. As it was not repairable i chucked it & removed it's software from my pc.

I have now bought another one. The problem is that everytime i plug it in, windows will not recognise the device & says it has malfunctioned. I have 4 usb 2.0 ports on my pc. Everything else i plug into any of these ports (digi camera, printer etc etc) is recognised & installed straight away.

I have put the wireless adaptor into a desktop pc & it was recognised & installed straight away. It seems that it is not the adaptor at fault it is the pc.

I am using XP Home Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 2.

TIA

JM
