Default Bogged down router

Hey again peoples

My 4-port D-Link router can't seem to handle the strain of my network because it periodically cuts out for a few seconds and then resumes, resulting in corrupted downloads and all sorts of stuff. I have an older 4-port router that I can hook up to it, but I'm not sure if this would take any of the strain off (would it?).

Would doing things like disabling wireless (I don't use it), shutting off DHCP, removing DHCP reservations, or anything firewall related help take some of the load off? thanks.

Which model of D-link is this ? I have a Dlink DGL 4100... it has never given a minute of trouble.
If you don't use the wireless you can disable it
the others -- I'd leave-- especially the firewall.
DHCP is part of how the router connects to your ISP

3 questions :
1) What Operating system/version/upgrades

2) How many PC's are in your network-- and are they firewalled ?

3) What exactly are you doing when you experience the issue.
.... a lengthy download perhaps ?

4 computers on the network, 2 with Vista 2 with XP. All computers receive a "network disconnected" error for a few seconds, usually when the router is in use by at least 2 computers, (downloads or gaming) except for the one that has a DHCP reservation, which is kind of odd but I guess that's just the way it likes to roll. I turned off the wireless, but I can't tell if it did anything. I'm thinking that the router is just cheap and too slow to easily process steady streams of information. No big deal, I guess it's just a minor inconvenience. Thanks for the tips.
