Default speaker crackle, burn smell

Hi, my wife's computer is acting strangely so i was wondering if someone ever experienced this or knows what is wrong. when we flip the switch on the wall to send power to the cord, before the pc is turned on, the internal speaker starts crackling. the internal speaker is also the speaker that plays sounds in windows. i tried turning on the pc anyway. it started up fine but it started smelling like burnt plastic. its an old horizontal case with old hardware too. thats about all i know about it. oh and it has win 98 lol! any ideas?

I hate to tell you this Citizen but I believe it is time to buy your wife a new computer. The crackle you hear is a filter cap on the motherboard failing. When this cap fails (and since you smell smoke, it probably has) it will most likely short out the motherboard.

If the PC will still boot I would back up all of your important files.
