Default Computer not talking.

Well, it all started when I got Mass Effect in the mail. Naturally I was ina mad hurry to play it, so I wasn't too impressed to find that my video card wasn't even close to big enough. Easy enough to fix, I went out and got a new one. Problem is that when I put it in, the PC refused to boot up. It sat there with the power on and everything appearing to work, but there was no signal to the monitor and as I have already mentioned no Booting. At first I assumed it was just the new card, so I pulled it and put the old one back in. No change.

I have now pulled out and checked every component, double- and triple-checked that all connections are in properly, and the only change is that the thing now beeps at me when I power it up. If it's of any interest, the beeps are two seperate then eight continuous.

So, any thoughts on what might be wrong and how I can fix it?

Hi Ralphius - Welcome to PCHF!!

What model motherboard do you have and also what models are both the old and new graphics cards. If you could please go to UserCP and select Edit Options. About 1/2 way down you'll see system specs. Change it to yes and complete as much info as you can. This will assist to help with problem quicker.

Post back when you have done this

OK I have put in what I can remember of the parts. I can't find the invoice for the rest. I've put the new Video card down. The old one was an ASUS AX700 256MB.

To Save you looking in there:

Motherboard - Intel D915PGN
CPU - intel 64 bit 3.2GHz
Graphics - ASUS EN8500GT 1 GB
RAM - 2x 512 DDR Generic.

8 beeps mean a graphics card error or no graphics card error, as it is happening with both graphics cards then its most likely your motherboard thats faulty.

Try reseating the new graphics card. Make sure there's no dust, etc in the slot. Maybe try blowing it out before putting reinserting gc. If it still doesn't work with either graphics then you will most likely need to replace the motherboard. If you can test the new graphics card in a friends pc to make sure that its not faulty as well.

Well, from what I can get from the intel site it's looking like the problem is a toasty motherboard. I haven't been able to test the card in another machine yet, but I think that it's unlikely to be the problem. Looks like i'm upgrading a little earlier than planned.

You have a Memory problem = the 2 beeps, and a video problem = 8 beeps. so it looks like you've fried you're RAM, Video card and naybe Motherboard. did you use an Anti Stactick wrist-band and mat?

Well that's a very grim view of things. I'm hoping that there's not a problem with the video card. I think that it should be ok given that there's no difference when I put the old one back in. My plan at the moment is to grab a new motherboard and CPU and see how things go from there.
